Kimchi & Karaoke
Since the 1980's many Korean businesses, markets, and entertainment venues have called 32nd Street and the immediate surrounding area home, dotting the landscape with Korean signage and delighting the senses of visitors with delectable restaurants serving traditional Korean cuisine.
Koreatown: A Bit of Background
New York City is home to nearly 90,000 Korean-Americans. While New York City's greatest concentration of Korean businesses is located in Flushing, Queens, 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway is often referred to as Korea Way, and for good reason.
Stroll down 32nd Street on any given day and you'll find shoppers crowding into Han Ah Reum, a supermarket chain specializing in Korean products (25 W. 32nd Street), hungry passersby watching the staff at Mandoo Bar shape homemade savory dumplings through the restaurant's front window (2 West 32nd Street), and night revelers crowding into the area's many restaurants and bars for a night of fun with friends.
Koreatown Around the Clock
New York's reputation of being
"the city that never sleeps" rings true in Koreatown where many
establishments stay open into the wee hours to entertain a nocturnal
crowd. Karaoke is a popular pastime on 32nd Street, and visitors
wishing to belt out a tune or two to a receptive and forgiving audience
of friends can be found at Grammy Karaoke (23 West 32nd Street)
and Gagopa Karaoke (28 West 32nd Street). Several of the restaurants
keep their doors open a full 24 hours to catch young patrons hungry
for a 4:00 a.m. meal after a full night of revelries.
For those that keep an earlier bedtime, Koreatown offers plenty
to do during the day. Lee Young Hee Korea Museum (2 West 32nd Street)
displays several pieces of traditional Korean dress, including the
traditional Korean costume known as a hanbok, while the Hun Gallery,
a 2,000 square foot establishment on the 3rd floor of 12 West 32nd
Street, is dedicated to showing contemporary art.
