The Heights of Charm

So where exactly are all of those sun-dappled sidewalks and elegant brownstones that you see in the New York movies and postcards anyway? Chances are they are in Brooklyn Heights, a charming neighborhood located along the East River.

Brownstone Way

While several New York neighborhoods can claim fame to a cadre of cute brownstones, the neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights easily rises to the top of the list when it comes down to concentration and preservation of these beautiful buildings. As the first landmarked district in New York, Brooklyn Heights' much loved and well-tended brownstone homes beckon the envy of many with their lush window boxes and stoops perfect for sitting on during a cool summer's evening. Stroll the sidewalks of Pierrepont Street, Grace Court, and State Street and it's easy to see why the neighborhood has become one of New York's most desired addresses.

A Walk Along the River
The popularity of Brooklyn Heights doesn't just lie with its captivating residences. Charming Montague Street, the neighborhood's main shopping strip, delights visitors with an assortment of local shops and restaurants, while the elaborately decorated Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity (157 Montague Street) treats the public to free organ recitals every Wednesday at 1:15. And, of course, one of the main attractions of Brooklyn Heights is the neighborhood's fine views of the East River, New York Harbor, and Manhattan from the famous 1.3 mile long Brooklyn Promenade, which runs from Remsen Street to Cranberry Street.

Constructed atop the multi-level Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Promenade was built in the1940s after a protracted battle over the highway's location. Robert Moses, who conceived of the BQE and other massive road projects within New York City, was convinced by residents of the neighborhood to cover the highway with the Promenade in order to protect local gardens from smog and noise. What resulted was a neighborhood treasure where today's residents and tourists mingle for prime photo-ops or settle into one of many benches lining the walkway for a spectacular sunset picnic.
