"It's My Park!" Day City Hall staff joined thousands of New Yorkers in caring for and celebrating New York City parks on Saturday, October 18, 2003 for Fall "It's My Park!" Day. The group joined area residents in a reforestation project at Inwood Hill Park, which contains the last natural forest in Manhattan. City Hall employees were especially happy to get respite from one jungle and enjoy spending time with each other in another -- in all a total of 403 trees were planted by 33 attendees, covering about 1/3 of an acre. Species planted included Red oak, Chestnut oak, Tulip poplar, Black birch, and Spicebush.
A Makeover for Washington Square Park with AT&T CARES There was lots of gardening going thanks to AT&T Cares employees! AT&T employees joined the country in commemorating the 30th annual National Volunteer Week, April 11-May 3, by cleaning up and beautifying Washington Square Park (located between West 4th Street and Waverly Place) and reflecting Americans' resolve to maintain the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor. MVC staff coordinated "A Work Day in the Park" joining AT&T employees in 9 other cities around the country who participated in this POLF initiative to "Celebrate Volunteers - The Spirit of America!". AT&T did a wonderful job planting, cleaning and sprucing up the Park while local residents made it a point to come over and thank them for all of their work in keeping the City's parks beautiful.
AMS & The ZOOM Kids at The Clothing Bank As one of the sponsors of National Volunteer Week, AMS sponsors volunteer projects as part of their Spark the Spirit of Community campaign. These initiatives bring AMSers together to serve as a benefit to children's nonprofit organizations in the communities where AMS people live and work. In New York City, AMS was looking for a rewarding, youth-oriented employee volunteer project; Channel Thirteen/WNET's ZOOM into Action show was seeking a venue to honor youth featured on the show for their outstanding volunteer projects; MVC's Clothing Bank was in need of helping hands. The result? A 3-way match made in heaven! On Saturday, May 3rd, the Clothing Bank hosted AMS Corporate Volunteer Day/ZOOM into Action Awards Ceremony at its Brooklyn Navy Yard Warehouse. AMS staff were extremely satisfied with their day of service, having assisted the Clothing Bank with the preparation of 500 bundles of children's wear while working with some of the best volunteers in New York City - our kids! The ZOOM kids received Certificates of Recognition as well as experiencing first-hand the impact of volunteerism at the Clothing Bank, a program which relies on volunteers to distribute the massive amounts of merchandise it receives daily.
Fleet Week Events MVC took the driver's seat in organizing community volunteer events for the sailors and marines that docked in NYC during Fleet Week. Our men and women in uniform pitched in to paint public schools in Washington Heights, assist with preparing clothing for the homeless, read to small children and much more. The community service projects were a success all around, allowing the sailors to experience a different side of New York City then they were used to seeing; allowing the people they served to meet them and learn more about what they did and how they got there; and lending support to a few of the amazing nonprofits in our City which provide so many crucial services to the City of New York and its residents. The following organizations participated in the community service events: MVC's Clothing Bank, Bellevue Hospital, Crown Heights Youth Collective, Meals on Wheels, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, Covenant House, Publicolor, Riverbank State Park, Special Olympics, God's Love We Deliver, Meals on WheelsStaten Island, and the Brooklyn Public Library.
