In 1967, The Mayor's Volunteer Center of New York City (formerly known as the Mayor's Voluntary Action Center) was created in order to provide leadership and assistance in mobilizing individuals and corporations to participate in volunteer activities throughout the City of New York.

As times have changed, so has the role of the Mayor's Volunteer Center (MVC). Since September 11th, more New Yorkers have expressed a desire to help their city. While monies and funding for non-profit and City agencies have decreased, the number of people wanting to volunteer has increased. MVC finds itself in the unique position of bringing together individuals and corporations who want to help. New York needs the support of its people more than ever. Our mission is to make every New Yorker a volunteer.

How can we help you participate? The Mayor's Volunteer Center and United Way New York City are proud to present VolunteerNYC.org to serve the dual purpose of providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for New Yorkers and providing nonprofit organizations in New York City the opportunity to post their volunteer needs and publicize the services provided by their organizations. By tailoring this website specifically to New York City, our database will allow you to search within your own borough and zipcode and get travel information for posted opportunities. The mission of VolunteerNYC.org is to help even the busiest New Yorker become a volunteer by giving them a great place to start.

Above all else, MVC is a resource for the City. Our new website is intended to help facilitate links between government and non-profit organizations, corporations, and individuals as we engage everybody for service. The impact of volunteer work has always had tremendously positive effects in the City of New York. MVC will help continue this proud tradition of New Yorkers volunteering to improve the City, their lives and the lives of the members of their communities.
