NEW YORK CITY PROCLAIMS JUNE 30, 2011 "SOCIAL MEDIA DAY" IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK
In Honor of Social Media Day, Pioneered by Mashable, City of New York Celebrates New Social Media Advisory and Research Taskforce (SMART), @nycgov Twitter Feed, and Custom Bit.ly Integration for NYC.GOV
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne have officially proclaimed June 30, 2011 Social Media Day in New York City. Social Media Day was pioneered by Mashable, the digital news site, to recognize and celebrate the revolution of media becoming a global, social dialogue. As part of Social Media Day, the City of New York is launching a new bit.ly integration and expanding its presence on Twitter and Tumblr.
“Mayor Bloomberg’s proclamation reinforces the growing importance of social media in City government and in New York City as a whole,” said Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne. “Unveiling our Tumblr verticals, our expanded presence on Twitter and our bit.ly integration underscores the importance of social media in the lives of so many New Yorkers. We want to commend Mashable for their efforts in pioneering Social Media Day.”
New York City government currently engages over 1.2 million individuals per month through social media. As part of the City’s digital road map, NYC Digital has introduced the Social Media Advisory and Research Taskforce, or SMART. This body consists of 15 members elected every six months by social media managers across the City. SMART members are responsible for helping to manage Citywide social media feeds, providing recommendations on social media tools and strategies, assisting emerging City agencies on social media, evaluating new social media platforms, and updating social media guidelines and policies..
The City will immediately introduce a custom link generator provided by bit.ly that streamlines the sharing and shortening of nyc.gov links. Users can also see how nyc.gov links are being shared, and identify the most useful information on nyc.gov.
Bit.ly is an online utility that allows users to shorten a long URL, share it and track the resulting usage. The NYC.gov bit.ly will retain ‘NYC.gov’ as part of the new shortened URL that’s created so users can tell at a glance where the link goes. This resource will also allow City agencies to better follow the effectiveness of their campaigns and digital resources.
NYC Digital has expanded its social media strategy by creating Twitter and Tumblr verticals. The Twitter vertical (@NYCGov), which was launched more than a month ago, curates high-level information from the City’s Twitter accounts to one easy to follow source. NYC Digital is also working closely with Tumblr to create a vertical that would serve as an aggregator for the City’s various Tumblr pages.
“We created the global event last year as a celebration of the technological advancements that enable everyone to have equal access to information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices heard,” said Mashable founder and CEO Pete Cashmore. “We are thrilled to have Social Media Day become official in New York City because we believe that New York City is a leader in using digital and social media to transform city government.”
Last year, the Mashable community organized more than 600 Social Media Day Meetups in 93 countries. This year, more than 6,500 people in 1,400 cities have signed up to participate in a Social Media Day Meetup.
In New York City, residents will celebrate at the Mashable Meetup at Brooklyn Bowl.
