Nearly 500 Tech Startups Have Launched in New York City Since 2007
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne and Internet Week New York Chairman David-Michel Davies today unveiled the “Made in NY” Digital Jobs Map, an interactive guide to the City’s startups, investors, incubators, and coworking spaces, including over 325 digital companies that are currently hiring for thousands of jobs. Highlighting the vibrant state of New York’s digital industry, Mayor Bloomberg invited startups and job seekers around the country to get on the map by moving to New York City. Created by Internet Week New York in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the Made in NY Digital Map already plots more than 500 digital companies across the five boroughs. The map offers direct links to the companies’ jobs listings pages and pinpoints the city’s hottest tech hubs, from the Flatiron District to DUMBO. The Mayor made the announcement at Internet Week headquarters and was also joined by Economic Development Corporation President Seth Pinsky and Branch CEO Josh Miller.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the winners of NYC BigApps 3.0, the third annual competition for software developers and members of the public to create web or mobile applications using official City data. A total of 11 winning applications were selected from a record 96 eligible applications that were submitted for this year’s contest. The Best Overall Application was awarded to NYCFacets, which seeks to streamline and simplify the process for accessing, understanding, and utilizing the tremendous amount of data available in the City’s NYC Open Data portal. Additional winning applications focused on simplifying trips to New York City, travel on the City’s subway system, and finding the best locations to do work around the City.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR WALCOTT ANNOUNCE 54 NEW SCHOOLS WILL OPEN NEXT FALL Academy for Software Engineering in Union Square Will Build on City’s Applied Sciences Capacity
New Schools Will Serve More than 21,000 Students in all Five Boroughs, Grades K-12
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott today announced that 54 new schools will open in the coming 2012-2013 school year, bringing the number of new schools opened under the Bloomberg Administration to 589. The new schools will welcome more than 7,000 students next year, and over 21,000 when they grow to full size. Evidence shows that new schools rank higher on parent satisfaction surveys than other schools across the City; perform better than schools they have replaced on the state’s annual math and reading exams; and graduate students at significantly higher rates, on average by 20 points and in some cases more than doubling that of schools they replace. The Mayor and Chancellor made the announcement at Washington Irving, the future site of the Academy for Software Engineering – a new 9-12 school where students will get deep exposure to a variety of career options in technology and programming and learn what it takes to be innovators in those industries.

NYC ISSUES REQUEST FOR PROPSALES TO ESTABLISH THE "MADE IN NY" MEDIA CENTER
In an effort to build on and expand the City’s thriving entertainment industry and bridge it to new opportunities in digital media, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, in connection with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, will issue a request for proposals for an operator and physical space to establish the “Made in NY” Media Center. The media center will provide media entrepreneurs with affordable workspace and serve as a central meeting place where traditional media companies and new media entrepreneurs can meet, interact and collaborate. It will host educational workshops and training sessions catered to segments across the media industry and intended to encourage the type of cross-sector learning and creative cooperation that will ensure that the media industry is well-positioned for the digital age. It will also support new businesses in the field of emerging media, like interactive entertainment, digital advertising and mobile apps, by providing high-quality, ready-to-use office space that will accommodate numerous companies and a variety of employees. The space will also include conference rooms, production office space and a screening room.

NEW IPHONE APP LETS DINERS LOCATE "A" RESTAURANTS FROM THE STREET CORNER
Beginning today, New Yorkers can check a restaurant’s letter grade from any street corner throughout the City using ABCEats NYC, a free iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch application that offers easy access to restaurant inspection grades and detailed inspection reports for each of the City's 24,000 restaurants.

Mayor Bloomberg today joined Twitter to announce the opening of the first-ever New York City Twitter office. Located at 340 Madison Avenue, the office will serve as the official East Coast headquarters for the company and will be home to 40 full-time employees, including engineers, designers and advertising executives, with plans to expand in the coming months. Twitter works with countless media companies in New York City and a growing number of start-ups that create useful business tools based on the Twitter platform and Twitter-related idea. The City of New York and @NYCMayorsOffice use Twitter to communicate with citizens, and City Twitter accounts have an aggregate following of more than 300,000.

NYC DIGITAL HOSTS ENGAGE NYC: SOCIAL MEDIA IN GOVERNMENT The City's First Annual Social Media Summit featuring speakers from Bitly, Facebook, Foursquare, Tumblr, Twitter
Engagement is one of the four core tenets of New York City's Road Map for the Digital City. As part of NYC Digital mission's to empower agencies to leverage social media to the fullest, and in partnership with the Mayor’s Office communications team, on September 27, 2011 NYC Digital hosted Engage NYC, our first annual social media summit. Held at the Paley Center for Media, over 100 people from across city government participated in the event, which featured presentations and strategic training on how to effectively use social media platforms to engage, inform and serve New Yorkers.
