1997 1st Place Best of Web Award

Best of Web 1st Place AwardNew York City beat a record number of local government Web site entries in this year’s seventh annual Best of the Web contest conducted by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology magazine.

Government Web sites were judged on their innovation and use of Web-based online technology to deliver government services, efficiency and time saved, economy and money saved, and functionality for improved citizen access.

“New York City has an extremely robust site. It is one of the few local government sites with a citizen customization component. It is easy to navigate and the section titled, ‘I want to’ is perfect for intuitive citizen use,” said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center and a Best of the Web judge for all seven years.

With more than 30,000 pages of content, NYC.gov provides over 100 online transactional services to its citizens. The city adopted a portal model in which emergency, information and interactive services, along with traditional business transactions are provided in a one-stop government site.

"I am pleased that NYC.gov has been recognized for putting the City of New York at the public’s fingertips," Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said. "It seems only fitting that in the 'City that never sleeps,' we have a government that is available and accessible 24 hours a day – not just for emergency services, but for informational services and traditional business transactions. Our city's Web site offers the public information and interactive services, providing users with the ability to interact with city government online, rather than by standing in line. I want to congratulate those responsible for creating and maintaining what is recognized as the top city Web site."

NYC.gov previous won 1st Place in 1997 and 3rd place in 1996's Best of the Web competition. Use of the Internet medium to deliver services to the City's customers is an essential part of the Mayor's Customer Service Initiative, which is being carried out by the Mayor's Office of Operations,a member of the Office of New Media.

NYC.gov was first launched in October 1995 and by July 1996 underwent a major redesign. By providing on-line services such as complaint forms, access to agency heads, and reporting of neighborhood infrastructure repairs, this year's first place prize moves NYC.gov even closer to its motto: "Don't stand in line; get on-line!"

Rounding out the top five winners in this year's local government are:
2nd place: Montgomery County, Md.
3rd place: Conyers, Ga.
4th place: Miami-Dade County, Fla.
5th place: Chicago
