Volunteering in City Hospitals
If you’re looking for a great way to volunteer in your community, look no further than your local City hospital. Over 8,000 volunteers contribute time annually to 11 of the City’s healthcare facilities. At Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, volunteers assist everyone from doctors, nurses, medical staff, incoming patients and family members waiting on loved ones in surgery. At Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, professional musicians and talents of all kinds offer art therapy to long-term patients with brain injuries and other conditions.

NICHE Senior-Friendly Nurse Training
At City hospitals, patients 65 years old and older represent 20 percent of hospital discharges. The NICHE program (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) is helping to train City hospital nurses to adopt age-sensitive care for the elderly patient population. The goal is to improve the health, well-being and patient experience of hospitalized seniors, and to reduce readmission rates and provide better outcomes. This episode of “That’s So New York” visits the Queens Hospital Center and the Elmhurst Medical Center—“senior-friendly” hospitals designed to meet the special needs of hospitalized elder adults.
