Memories
In Memories, Filmmaker Jordan Burns asks his subjects, elderly residents in a Brooklyn nursing home, to share some of their fondest memories - as well as some of their most painful - in this moving meditation on memory, loss and love.

Superstar
Naiquan has many dreams...being a writer, actor, filmmaker and possibly a singer. This is a film about Naiquan's family not realizing their dreams and him not wanting to follow that path. Naiquan will accomplish his dreams because he's a "Superstar".

Lost Minds
In Lost Minds, change is an important part of life that is sometimes good, sometimes bad and many times unavoidable and uncontrollable. In “Lost Minds” two very different families are connected by the same life-changing disease that has greatly affected the people that they love. This film takes the viewers on a journey from the onset of the disease to the final stages of the disease and explores how these families have struggled, accepted and overcome.

This week on Reel Works with Byron Hurt, three very personal stories about parents. These stories cover everything from a charming love story that began on a tennis court almost seventy years ago, to a look into the lives of a same sex couple raising three kids.

If U Want To Get Technical
In If U Want To Get Technical, filmmaker Riaebia Robinson explores her home life, where she is being raised by her sister and her sister’s girlfriend. Riaebia finds that their hopes and dreams are no different than that of any other family.

Love Match
Eric Balgley turns the camera on his grandparents in Love Match, revealing how the history of his whole family boiled down to a chance meeting on a tennis court.

The Donkey and the Bicycle
In The Donkey and the Bicycle, we see the profound effect a father's absence has on the family he left behind. This is a story of a young woman who finally gets her father to make good on the promise of teaching her how to ride a bike.




  New Youth: Stories of New York
WATCH ON DEMAND!
Three teens explore their Brooklyn neighborhoods in very unique ways.  All having been raised in Brooklyn, New York, Negesti, Robbie, and Josh, each take look at their city, from their personal connections (or lack thereof) to their neighborhoods, to difficult issues like graffiti laws.
THE FILMS
Things Done Changed
In our first film Things Done Changed, Josh Geon finds himself coming to the realization that graffiti is a dying art. What once made the city streets pop with color and art is now a serious crime. 

Bed Stuy Do or Buy
In Bed Stuy Do or Buy filmmaker Negesti Cantave realizes her neighborhood is changing and tries to figure out where she fits in. We follow her as she explores what gentrification really means to her and her neighbors. 

New Youth
In our last film, New Youth, filmmaker Yasha Gruben takes us on an eye-opening journey to a night out on the town with friends where we see what some teens are truly up to. Yasha exposes the grim reality of teen alcohol and drug abuse.




  Missing Without You: Stories About Missing Family Members

It’s very painful when someone is separated from their family, either by death or other means. This episode features three stories of families torn apart.
THE FILMS
Missing Without You
In Missing Without You, Rashawna Paul journeys to visit her older brother, who is currently incarcerated on Riker’s Island. On the way there, she reflects on the path her brother chose, and it’s impact on her family.

Untitled Film by Daniel Kharlack
In the second film, Daniel Kharlack (director of last season’s Poetry In The Dark) returns with another portrait of a close family member – his grandmother. The film examines how she copes with the loss of her husband of 40 years.

Family Secret
The final film of the episode, Family Secret, follows filmmaker Melody Roman as she attempts to track down her estranged brother, who left the family when she was a baby.

Negative to Positive
In Negative to Positive, filmmaker Derek Garcia delves into his aunt’s drug abuse and how it shaped his cousins lives forever. The film is followed up by an update on Derek's cousins three years later, and their mother who is recently out of rehab.

Silence in Black and White
In Silence in Black and White, filmmaker Shaniece Bouldin explores the abuse she lived through and ultimately freed herself from in this experimental piece.

In Missing Without You, a teenage girl, Rashawna Paul, tries to keep a relationship with her brother after he’s sent to prison on Rikers Island. .

If You Were in My Shoes
Philip Devore did all he could to take care of his grandfather. In this sensitive film, Philip takes the necessary steps to move forward while holding on to his Grandfather’s memory.

THE FILMS
A Look Through My Eyes
In A Look Through My Eyes, a father tries to understand where he fits in to his daughter’s life and the impact he's had on her after a painful divorce. Through a very personal documentary, Shawlaun Nelson tries to come to terms with her father’s decision. 

Missing Pieces
In Missing Pieces, a young man walks through life after losing his father to AIDS and his mother to drugs shortly after. Spending most of his life in foster care, filmmaker Kagen Hall tries to find the meaning of his life. 

How Can I Learn to Love in Two Separate Homes
Shamoria Fields tries to find a place in her family, while stuck in the middle of her parent's divorce. 



  Self-Image

Teens try to find the answer to who they are, beyond the reflection they see in the mirror.
THE FILMS
Scrolii
"Scrolli" became the cruel nickname for Vanessa Batau, after being diagnosed with scoliosis. However, Vanessa refuses to allow the disease to get the best of her and uses the back brace she’s forced to wear to feel stronger about her image. 

Vanessa Follow-up to Scrolli
Several years after making Scrolii and after winning several film festival awards, Vanessa goes on a personal journey to discover the Haitian culture her parents always kept secret from her. In retaliation, Vanessa enters the Miss Haiti Beauty Pageant. 

Self Internal
"Self Internal" urges us to look deeper into who are. Filmmaker Rachel Adkins, examines her bi‐racial identity and how it prompted her to question identity in general. 

Skin and Bones
In “Skin and Bones,” a girl displays her bulimic condition on screen, in hopes of shedding some light the dangerous and deadly disease that runs ramped amongst teenage girls.

99 Hammers
Filmmaker Alvis Rojas explores his relationship with his father, which is filled with ups and downs. In “99 Hammers”, Alvis tries to understand his relationship with his absent and neglectful father, while also mourning his death. 

The Trouble with Danny
In “The Trouble with Danny” Filmmaker Rafi Pope-Sussman tries to figure out what it is that makes his older, adopted brother Danny so withdrawn and different from the rest of the family. Rafi interviews his whole trying to understand what exactly is the trouble with Danny. 

Losing My Way
Through a rarely seen combination of Poetry, Dance and Drama, Saalim conjures a mere illustration of what it feels like, mentally and emotionally, to be Bi-Polar. With the help of an opera-style soundtrack, "Losing My Way", brings to an image, what very few can say of this topic with the use of just word. 



  Searching for Meaning

THE FILMS

Beware of God
Beware Of God is a film about a young man’s journey to try to regain his faith. After the death of loved ones and the events of 9/11, Roberto Beltre tries to connect to people who have faith in God, to see if he can once again believe. 

On the Terrace of a Thousand Yellow Suns
The film is experimental, based on a short story written by the filmmaker's close friend. 

Dear Kathy
Is love worth the pain of an unavoidable break up? Is it wise to get into a relationship when you know it is going to end? “Dear Kathy” explores these questions through the lens of the filmmaker’s five month relationship with his girlfriend, which seems destined to face problems when he leaves for college.

Caught in the Middle
The film looks at a daughter's relationship with her mother and grandmother, and the tension of being forced to choose between them.
