  New York City Parks Department Recruiting Lifeguards
Are you a good swimmer?  You could earn $650 a week as an NYC Parks Department lifeguard.  Candidates must be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds, have good vision, be at least 16 years old when the job starts, and pass the qualifying test.  Get the facts at nycgovparks.org and click on "Become a Lifeguard".



  New York City Department of Small Business Services
If you're interested in jobs with new opportunities, the city's Small Business Services office can help you get training in areas such as computer repair, construction, green collar energy jobs, healthcare, food services, TV and film production, and cable installation.  If you'd like to find out how to enroll, call 311 and ask for Workforce1 or go to www.nyc.gov/workforce1.  SBS also offers assistance to anyone who wants to start their own company.  The agency offers a legal review of contracts and leases, financing assistance to help you identify lenders, incentives to save you money as your business expands, recruitment services and business courses to reach your goals.  Visit www.nyc.gov/sbs for more info.



  Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan
The city is working to create 1700 new jobs at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and 40 percent of them will be green industry jobs.  The expansion is part of the City's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan to create jobs for New Yorkers and implement a vision for long-term economic growth.  A 60,000 square foot greenhouse is planned to manufacture eco-friendly products.  The plan will also ultimately lead to 800 construction jobs.

  Recommendations from the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities
The 55a program - Section 55-a of the New York State Civil Service Law permits municipalities to employ persons, who have been certified as physically or mentally disabled, in civil service positions on a non-competitive basis. This provision is implemented by the City of New York through the 55-a Program, which is administered by the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services. You must be certified as being physically or mentally disabled and qualified to perform the duties of the job.

Just One Break or JOB - JOB was co-founded by Orin Lehman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bernard Baruch and Howard Rusk in 1947. At that time, the agency served veterans with disabilities who were ready to go back to work. JOB has expanded its mission to include all job seekers with disabilities, both visible and hidden. Recently, JOB entered into a partnership with Abilities!, a nationally recognized Long Island-based organization that provides services to employers and job seekers.   The Department of Citywide Administrative Services Exams and Jobs
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) ensures that City agencies have the critical resources and support needed to provide the best possible services to the public. The Legal Action Center

Medgar Evers College Center for Law and Social Justice
