Roger Newman

Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs (MOVA) Commissioner, Roger K. Newman is a graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice where he received a Bachelors Degree in Deviant Behavior and Social Control. He served four years in the United States Air Force including a year in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1970.
Prior to becoming Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs in 2007, Commissioner Newman served as Deputy Commissioner for Family Services at the Department for Homeless Services (DHS) where he had oversight responsibility for 150 Family Homeless facilities operated by both by non-profit and profit agencies. Agency that provided services to over 9,000 families.
Prior to his DHS tenure he worked at the Human Resources Administration as a Regional Director. Before coming to City government, Commissioner Newman was the Residence Director at Boerum Hill, a not-for-profit facility operated by the Brooklyn Psychosocial Rehabilitation Institute that provided a wide range of services to previously institutionalized individuals.
Mr. Newman has over thirty years of experience working with ‘Forgotten Children of American Servicemen’ and providing social services to autistic children, individuals with psychiatric issues and homeless families.
