Meet the Experts

  Lucy Cherkasets
Clarity Media Group
Lucy Cherkasets Montin leads the interview/career coaching division at Clarity Media Group. Lucy first met Bill McGowan, Founder of CMG, in 1997 during a reunion at their alma mater, Riverdale Country School. After staying in touch and noting each other's professional accomplishments for several years, Bill invited Lucy to join CMG in 2003 as an Assistant Media Trainer.

Lucy went on to pursue a career in human resources, ultimately becoming HR Manager for LaForce + Stevens, a prestigious public relations firm in Manhattan. In 2008, Lucy relocated to London, UK where she served as Director of Human Resources for PRCo, an international luxury travel pr firm. She worked across all of PRCo's seven international offices, focusing special attention on New York, London, Moscow and Munich. After interviewing over 1,000 candidates during her HR work, Lucy identified a real need for job seekers to better prepare for interviews and other aspects of the job hunt. Combining their media training and HR experiences, Bill and Lucy expanded Clarity Media Group to include a career division, where they coach clients seeking career advancement.

Lucy is fluent in Russian, and proficient in French and Spanish. In addition to her work with Clarity Media Group, she is the New York representative at the United Nations for Russia's oldest NGO, The Federation of Peace and Reconciliation and a long time volunteer with The TEAK Fellowship.

Tips

INTERVIEW DO'S AND DONT'S

Some interview Do's:
1). Show, don't tell: instead of simply telling the interviewer your best qualities, use vivid examples to paint the picture for them.
2). Get to the point: if your response is too long, you will lose the interviewer's attention as well as losing your focus causing you to go off on tangents. Keep your answers short, don't be afraid to cut yourself off.
3). Do your homework: use the Internet to study the company's website as well as research recent news and other relevant information.
4). Pay attention to personal grooming and dress appropriately, always airing on the side of more formal business attire.
5). Know your resume: Make sure that you have reviewed your entire resume and can speak to everything that you included on it if asked.

Some interview Don'ts:
1). Don't bash your job/boss: do not be negative about your current or last job when asked why you want a change.
2). Don't lie/inflate your experience: the interviewer will most likely find out.
3). Don't forget your resume: bring at least three copies to the interview
4). Don't use your phone/PDA: turn it off before you enter the building and do not turn it on until you have left.
5). Don't drone on with your answers to the point of boring the interviewer. Employers are looking for people who can cut to the chase and still explain something thoroughly.
