Throughout this special episode, host Kelly Choi takes viewers on a tour of the boroughs as she discovers the mysteries behind an unusual mix of landmarks that have played an important part in the City’s history. Kelly first travels to a maritime community in the Bronx where the local Nautical Museum preserves a time when City Island was an oyster and shipbuilding capital. Kelly sails the treacherous currents off shore that have claimed hundreds of ships, following the legend of an 18th century buried treasure.

Sandy Ground in Rossville, Staten Island, is the nation’s oldest African American community, founded by free black families whose ancestors still live there. Kelly discovers the long heritage of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and joins a church member on the waters of the Arthur Kill, searching for the remains of a ferry boat which might have carried runaway slaves to freedom.

Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, one of the City’s national parks, has a special set of secrets. The airfield helped defend New York during World War II, and as Kelly explores Floyd Bennett’s hangar, she discovers one of the most important airplanes ever designed: the Douglas DC-3.  As a passenger plane in the 1930s, it made coast to coast flights a reality; as a military craft, it helped win the war.

Kelly then visits a simple house in Corona, Queens, where jazz legend Louis Armstrong spent the last decades of his life. It’s also where he made hundreds of personal audio tapes that reveal an intimate and fascinating private side of the great musician’s life.
