NYC MEDIA AND HOWCAST ANNOUNCE CONTENT PARTNERSHIP
New Partnership Will Broaden NYC Media’s Content across Multiple Platforms

2,200 NYC Department of Sanitation Trucks Will Feature NYC Media Quick Response (QR) Codes Linking to a “How to Recycle” Video Created by Howcast

July 15, 2010 - NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York, and Howcast today announced a content partnership that will provide New Yorkers with custom content about important City services through a fun and creative video created by Howcast. The ‘how-to recycle’ video will begin to appear in six to eight weeks and may be accessed through Quick Response (QR) code featured on the side of nearly 2,200 New York City Department of Sanitation trucks. The video will also be broadcast on the City’s flagship television station, NYC life (channel 25), as well as online at www.nyc.gov/media.

In the interim, scanning the QR codes from the sides of sanitation trucks will give users access to a video from NYC Media’s show “The Green Apple: Recycling.” In later weeks, the QR code will then link to the Howcast recycling video.

“New Yorkers have been already been coming to our channels and our website for who, where, when and why - now they can add ‘how’,” said NYC Media Chief Operating Officer Todd Asher. “We are also enthusiastic about continuing to use QR code technology and other innovative technology to help get the City’s message out.”

NYC Media successfully launched a multi-agency campaign using QR codes in Times Square during Internet Week 2010. QR code allows smart phone users to immediately receive photos, messages, and links by scanning the displayed code with their enabled devices. One of the ways NYC Media will continue to advance the City’s messaging is through further incorporation of QR codes highlighting City services and initiatives. Using this platform, NYC Media displays can be seen on both sides of 2,200 sanitation trucks beginning on Monday, July 12. QR technology will also enable the City to change the message without physically having to adjust each display because the code can be repurposed.

Known for making high quality how-to videos, NYC-based Howcast Media - info.howcast.com/about -provides informative and entertaining content that is optimized for search and multi-platform distribution. Working with NYC Media, Howcast will create custom content to be made available to New Yorkers online, on television, or on their mobile devices.

“Instructional video provides one of the most effective mediums to reach and educate New Yorkers, and NYC Media's integration of QR codes to access this content is a great example of how New York City can provide its residents with the information they need, anywhere,” said Jason Liebman, Howcast Media CEO and co-founder.
