Coenties Slip Park

In October 2004, bored logs that were used as water mains and were part of the Manhattan Water Company's system prior to 1808 were found during the construction of Coenties Slip Park.

1808 Watermain Logs

Monument Lot, Vinegar Hill

This site once contained the monument to the American prisoners of war who were held in Wallabout Bay by the British during the American Revolution. Although the monument was moved to Fort Greene Park in 1873, it was thought that the site might still contain human remains and the crypt where they were interred which would be disturbed by proposed as-of-right construction. Archaeological fieldwork uncovered the surviving portion of one of the crypt walls, but otherwise revealed that the site was very disturbed. The agency is grateful to Dr. Joan Geismar for donating her archaeological services, to Vinegar Hill Group LLC for allowing the archaeology to occur and to the Kaplan Fund for giving a $2500 emergency grant for related expenses. We are also grateful that the owner has agreed to have a sign at the site describing its important history.
