I sue parents for child support and litigate in paternity trials. I find great satisfaction in using my legal skills to help children in these ways. The Law Department’s effort is part of a federal program under which parents or other caretakers of children around the country and in other countries may go into their local agencies and file petitions to establish paternity and/or child support against the New York men over whom we can acquire jurisdiction. The parent on whose behalf we sue is often the mother, many of whom have left New York with the child or children to escape a soured or abusive relationship with a husband or boyfriend in hopes of never encountering him again. When they lose their job or are disabled or apply for welfare, or just can’t meet expenses, they find they need the father’s help (sometimes keeping their new address confidential) and occasionally the process even ends up reuniting families. Yet, very often the child is in the care of a father down on his luck who needs the New York mother’s monetary help to raise a child, or an aunt or uncle or grandmother or grandfather or a kindly neighbor handling the child-raising responsibility, who may be suing either New York parent. They are often grateful for our work and we are rewarded by being able to help.
