At IREA, we explore each candidate’s unique situation prior to approval of their application for cash assistance, as mandated by New York State Social Services law. Our front-end investigations protect state resources and helps the State and the City avoid paying for benefits improperly. These investigations saved more than $319 million in 2013. The front-end investigations ensures the information in cash assistance applications are accurate, and working in conjunction with eligibility specialists, helps ensure those applying for benefits are processed accurately. IREA’s also investigates and reviews suspicious case information post-application, and, in 2013, our efforts recovered $38.8 million in improper payments in the cash assistance program—money that was returned to New York State and to New York City.
