| At IREA, we explore each candidate’s unique situation prior to approval of their application for cash assistance, as mandated by New York State Social Services law. Our front-end investigations results in an immense amount of fraudulent disbursements avoided-more than $660 million in 2011. The vast proportion, 48%, of cash assistance cases assigned to IREA are recommended for closing after a total of 87,654 office interviews and 45,190 interviews in which IREA visits recipients at home. Out of all cases, 2,205 had an outcome in which IREA found fraud and abuse and avoided expenditure of unnecessary funds, with the remaining 2,337 cases, after performing proper investigations, the recipients were found to be properly applying for or receiving funds. IREA’s cash reimbursement unit identifies for recovery $21,456,803, which are then returned to the City of New York after discovery of fraud and abuse of the cash assistance program. IREA’s work with Cash Assistance ensures that there are enough funds for those who actually need them, while preventing unjust enrichment by those who do not.
