After you check out our list of (Almost) 100 Ideas for Free or Cheap Things to Do With Your Kid in NYC and are about to head out for the day with your kids, just take a minute or two to make sure you've got everything you'll need. Here are some suggestions for items you might want to throw in your backpack to avoid hassles later on:
  • NYC subway and bus maps 
  • A loaded Metrocard
  • A pad and pencil/pens (for games of hangman, Tic Tac Toe, etc.)
  • The latest book you're reading with your kid(s)
  • A ball (for an impromptu game of catch)
  • A deck of cards
  • A camera
  • Healthy snacks (nuts, granola bars, etc.)
  • Bottled water
  • Children's aspirin or allergy pills, or any other medication(s), depending on your child's personal needs
  • Band-Aids (it's a good idea to have an assortment of sizes)
  • Antiseptic cream or liquid (for disinfecting cuts and scrapes)
  • Recent photographs of your kids, in case you get separated and need to show a police officer
  • A list of contact phone numbers and health information about your child.
