Department of Homeless Services (DHS) has implemented several father-friendly initiatives within its Single Adults shelter system. Specifically, staff has aimed to target three separate groups of clients: young men between the ages of 16 and 24 who do not yet have children, expectant fathers and current fathers.
Since the launch of the program last summer, DHS has posted signage inside of shelters, encouraging fathers to play an active role in the lives of their children. The agency also holds seminars twice a month at two facilities for single adults– Barbara Kleiman and Kingsboro Star (both in Brooklyn). Covering different topics pertaining to fatherhood; these seminars aim to inform clients, as well as support them as they strive to build better relationships with their kids. Additionally, workshops on safe sex, birth control, STDs and abstinence are held on-site in order to help men make smart choices.
