The Human Resources Administration worked with the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) and the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) to develop an electronic system that speeds the Social Security Disability determination process for HRA clients. The system, ASSETS (Application for Social Security Electronic Transmission System) was introduced on October 23, 2007. ASSETS enables HRA to submit medical documentation to OTDA, which conducts medical reviews of Social Security Disability applications for SSA in New York state. ASSETS replaces a paper based process that was cumbersome because of the high volume of requests for information and the large size of each medical documentation package.
