Homeowners, co-op owners and building owners and landlords from Manhattan Valley and East Harlem in Manhattan and Mott Haven in the Bronx are invited to attend a Thursday February 22 Owners’ Night at 7 East 116th St in Manhattan. organized by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). The event is co-sponsored by Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito whorepresents District 8 which includes the neighborhoods mentioned above.
The event will provide information on the availability of HPD services such as low-interest loans, housing violations correction and assistance with mortgages and refinancing as well as HPD courses including building management and maintenance, expense reduction strategies and owner-tenant relations. Attendees will watch a DVD entitled "Services for Residential Property Owners" that presents HPD's services and rehabilitation loan programs. A panel of experts from HPD will then answer questions from the audience.
HPD Commissioner Shaun Donovan said, "Many property owners are unaware of the assistance that is available for maintaining and improving their properties. The Owners' Nights provide opportunities to put people in touch with assistance they can use. Maintaining and preserving New York City's housing stock and encouraging investment in infrastructure improvements to homes and apartment buildings is a fundamental objective of Mayor Bloomberg's New Housing Marketplace Plan, a $7.5 billion plan to create and preserve 165,000 affordable housing units for 500,000 New Yorkers over ten years.”
“I want to especially encourage homeowners and Housing Development Fund shareholders to take advantage of this program that will help improve conditions of their property,” said Council Member Mark-Viverito.
HPD’s Owner Services Program travels from borough to borough, educating residential property owners about the availability of low-interest loans, free educational classes on subjects such as lead paint, energy conservation and fair housing as well as free owner counseling. Launched in February 2001, Owners’ Nights in neighborhoods such as Morrisania in the Bronx and Park Slope in Brooklyn have drawn more than 10,000 property owners to events across New York City.
