HPD's Contractor Training Program helps construction entrepreneurs to learn the business skills needed to run a successful company. The program runs for 12 weeks and participants meet one evening per week.
CURRICULUM:

Introduction: This session provides an introduction to the course and an overview of the responsibilities and contractual relationships between owners, architects, general contractors and subcontractors in the construction industry. Topics include bidding, trade coordination and changes in the industry.

The Business Plan: This session is an overview of the contents and goals of a business plan. Participants will be encouraged throughout the course to incorporate the information presented into a written plan to be completed and evaluated prior to graduation.

Legal Organization/Contracts: This session provides practical advice on negotiating and enforcing the construction contract. Forms of business organization, disputes and the legalities of joint ventures will also be discussed.

Construction Estimating I: This two part session offers practical approaches to architectural plans and working drawings, evaluating and calculating labor, material and equipment and overhead costs for small to mid-size residential projects.

Accounting for Your Small Business: An introduction to basic financial management concepts. Topics include: keeping accurate and complete records, assets, debits and credits, ledgers, and preparing a financial statement.

Insurance for Contractors: This session provides practical knowledge of the concept of risk management and the types of liability coverage available.

Bonding: Learn the types of bonds available, how bonds are underwritten, and what the agent/surety looks for in order to make a decision.

Marketing the Firm: Tips on developing an effective and ongoing marketing plan. Emphasis is placed on defining the client base and the evaluation of strategies.

Public/Private Sector Opportunities: Guest speakers from public agencies, private firms and business associations will make presentations.
