Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as Food Stamps) is a federal program available to help individuals and families, both employed and unemployed meet their food needs. You can use food stamp benefits at food retailers that accept the benefit including supermarkets, bodegas, small grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, and even farmers’ markets throughout NYC. You pay for food purchases with an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, the food card, which works just like a bank issued debit card.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Citizenship/Immigration Status: U.S. citizen or

  • Immigrants who may be eligible:

    • Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR): children under 18 years old and adults who have lived in the country for 5 years as an LPR;

    • Individuals receiving disability-related assistance or benefits, regardless of date of entry into the United States;

    • Children regardless of date of entry into the United States;

    • Refugees and asylees; or

    • Adults who are unable to document their own legal status may apply on behalf of their children.

      Many other immigrants may be eligible.

How to Enroll in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Required Documentation

  • You can call 311 or click here to find out where you can go to enroll in your neighborhood.

    For more information on applying for the food stamps program, visit FoodBank for New York City, a non-profit agency which helps individuals and families apply for food stamps and other work support benefits.

    For detailed information on the food stamp program requirements and more detailed immigration eligibility information visit the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.

    To find a food service provider (food pantry, soup kitchen, or senior center), call 311. You can also visit Food For Survival, the Foodbank for New York City.
