Urology/Treatment of Prostate Cancer, Lithotripsy

The Departments of Urology and Radiation Oncology offer prostate cancer patients treatment via interstitial implantation. Under continuous ultrasound monitoring, radioactive seeds of iodine or palladium are implanted into the prostate gland. The procedure is performed under anesthesia, and, in many cases, may be done on an outpatient basis. This treatment allows these patients to be treated without conventional surgery, which may affect urinary control and sexual function. Moreover, prolonged hospitalization is avoided. The results of this procedure have been excellent.

Since 1998, the Department of Urology has utilized a new technique known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), wherein shock waves are used to break up stones in the urinary tract. This alleviates the need for conventional surgery for many patients who suffer from kidney stones. Between eight and ten patients are scheduled for the procedures, which is performed twice per month.
