Led by Dr. Isaac Sachmechi, the new Queens Center of Excellence in Diabetes Management provides a broad range of high quality, well-integrated diabetes services with an emphasis on screening, education and management to prevent disabling and life-threatening complications. Our diabetes team consists of physicians, a diabetes educator, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, social workers and dietitians who share the goal of increasing patient awareness and enhancing recruitment of patients to the Diabetes Center.

Studies have shown that aggressive gylcemic control reduces the diabetes complication, and that aggressive control of blood pressure and treatment of hyperlipidemia in the diabetic patient reduces their mortality from heart disease and stroke. At the Queens Diabetes Center, a patient's condition is assessed and routine referrals are provided as needed to the Departments of Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Podiatry, Nephrology, Vascular Surgery, Dentistry, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Urology. The service is a member of the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Program, and has participated in industry-sponsored clinical trials.

At present, Queens Hospital Center has two diabetes outpatient clinics where approximately 650 patients are being treated, constituting some 3,000 annual clinic visits. The new Center of Excellence assures further expansion of these services.
