As much as we try to keep ourselves and our families safe and healthy, serious accidents—demanding the type of care available only at Trauma Centers—do happen. Traumas are life or limb-threatening injuries or wounds demanding on-the-spot attention by a team of expert healthcare professionals. Traumatic injuries may be caused by motor vehicle crashes, sports accidents, falls, assaults (such as gunshot and stab wounds), and accidents, anywhere and at any time. While many injuries can be treated at the nearest hospital's emergency room, life-threatening traumatic injuries need specialized care that is administered only at an accredited trauma center. Six HHC hospitals, which are part of the Regional Trauma Quality Improvement (QI) Program, administered by the New York State Department of Health, deliver that kind of specialized care.
