Jacobi Medical Center Named Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
by American College of Radiology Full Accreditation Also Awarded to Jacobi’s Breast Ultrasound, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Mammography Modalities Bronx, NY – Jacobi Medical Center, a member of the NYC Health & Hospitals Corporation, has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR has also awarded a three-year full accreditation to Jacobi for its Breast Ultrasound, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Mammography modalities. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that Jacobi has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs. The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement. Our Imaging Service is at the forefront in use of technologic innovation. Digital imaging equipment for mammography is supplemented by modern breast ultrasound units and breast MRI facilities,” said Dr. Miriam David, Director of Women’s Imaging, Jacobi Medical Center. “Achieving such designation tells breast cancer patients and their families that we go above and beyond the standard of care.” According to Dr. David, patients with suspicious findings are immediately referred for further investigation and evaluations. “Jacobi has state of the art equipment to support a sophisticated biopsy program, and we try to provide a supportive and caring environment as our patients undergo imaging evaluations,” says Dr. David. "When malignancies are found, patients can access our excellent Breast Surgery service, headed by Dr. Maria Castaldi, as well as reconstructive plastic surgeons and the specialty services of medical oncologists and radiation therapists."
