ONE MORE DAY: The Voyage of Women Battling Breast Cancer
On March 3, 2006, Metropolitan Hospital Center hosted the premier of “Un Día Más” (One More Day) a Spanish-language film of the very personal journeys of healing for several Mexican women diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in Mexico. The film masterfully showed the individual vulnerabilities and fears each woman had, including worry about how the illness would impact their families and relationships. The women develop a very special supportive bond with one another throughout the filming.
“One More Day” was produced in Mexico by Foundation Cima to raise awareness about breast cancer. It is the result of a collective effort from Alejandra De Cima, Maria Ines Roque, Director of the documentary, and the AVON Foundation. The premier was the result of a combined effort between Metropolitan Hospital Center and the Mexican Consulate of New York City.
Joining invited guests at the premier were Louis Martir, Executive Director, Metropolitan Hospital Center, Javier Díaz de Leon, Acting Consulate General of New York City, and Marc Hurlbert, Senior Advisor, AVON Foundation. Also attending were representatives from the Islamic Cultural Center, the American Cancer Society, Manhattan Breast Health Partnership, Metroplus and staff of Metropolitan Hospital. Guests joined the Hospital and Consulate Staff at a reception after the movie.
The next showing of this documentary will be as part of the Cancer Awareness Program at Metropolitan Hospital Center in April and May. Those wanting more information about the film may contact Delfina Maria Rodriquez at 212 423-7993.
The AVON Foundation is currently providing grant funding to Metropolitan Hospital Center to enhance and ensure culturally sensitive breast health education and services. Metropolitan Hospital Center is located at 97th Street and First Avenue. It is a member of the Generations+/Northern Manhattan Health Network, which includes Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center and Harlem Hospital Center. Metropolitan is also a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
