Patient Safety Fair Winners
(L-R) Christine Uduebo, MPH, BDS, Director, Patient Safety, HHC Health & Home Care; Carol Williams, RN, Head Nurse, ColerGoldwater Specialty Hospital & Nursing Facility; Sirisha Jasti, MD, Chief Resident, Dept. of Medicine, Kings County Hospital Center; Raghu Loganathan, MD, FCCP, Director, Medical ICU & Stroke Center, Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center

HHC's Patient Safety Exposition, held in April at Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility, gave HHC facilities the opportunity to demonstrate their success in keeping patients safe. The 34 entries included presentations on such topics as prenatal health education; managing oral medications for home care patients; improving adherence to annual gynecological exams in women with HIV, and the medical management of pressure ulcers.

"Everyone here is a winner," HHC President Alan Aviles told the group. "I was very impressed by how sophisticated the presentations were this year. The event has really grown and shows the pride, the passion and the critical thinking that are helping us achieve our goal of becoming one of the safest healthcare systems in the county."

First Prize awards were given in each of three categories of patient care. For Community Based Services, the award went to HHC Health and Home Care for its successful work on management of oral medications with home care patients. For Long Term Care Services, Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility took the prize for its initiative on reducing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP). The award for Hospital-Based Services went to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Services for its pioneering work on decreasing mortality in severe sepsis and septic shock. The Grand Prize went to Kings County Hospital for saving lives by significantly reducing the rates of hospital-acquired deep vein thrombosis.
