On November 6, HHC received a 2007 Life & Breath Award from the American Lung Association (ALA) in recognition of it organization-wide mobilization to confront the asthma epidemic. Accepting the award, HHC President Alan D. Aviles confirmed that "we have made the fight against chronic illnesses such as asthma and lung disease a cornerstone of our healthcare agenda."
More than 18% of New York City children suffer from asthma, and HHC has met those devastating statistics with an aggressive approach that follows best practices of asthma care and engages patients in their own care. Asthma-related pediatric emergency visits have declined by 24% and hospital admissions dropped by 30% during the past two years.
Earlier this year, HHC employees participated enthusiastically in the ALA Asthma Walk, raising $70,000, more than doubling funds raised in the previous year.
