HHC facilities are celebrating Black History Month in February with programs and exhibits that recognize African-American pioneers in medicine and the important cultural contributions of African Americans in the U.S.
Kings County Hospital is hosting two photo exhibits: a “Wall of Fame” featuring 16 outstanding African-American cardiologists and another honoring Black Nurse Pioneers. Ms. Josephine Bolus, RN, who was a nurse at Kings County Hospital for 26 years and a member of the HHC Board of Directors, and Catherine Alicia Georges, Ed.D, RN, Chair of the Nursing Department at Lehman College, will be recognized for their outstanding leadership as nurse pioneers. African-Americans make up more than a third of the patient population at HHC, and blacks are represented among professional staff and in leadership positions throughout the corporation.
Bellevue Hospital will host screenings and discussions of the film "African American Lives" on Feb. 17 and 24 and will hold several genealogy workshops. The Coler–Goldwater Therapeutic Recreation staff has put together window displays and panels that will feature images of prominent African- American artists, writers and leaders. At Lincoln Hospital, the Lincoln Committee of Friends is sponsoring events including a performance of the Garifuna Folkloric Ballet on Feb. 18. And the Generations+/Northern Manhattan Health Network has produced a 14-month calendar that lists people, events, inventions and milestones in U.S. black history.
