A new gallery of photos and artifacts at Lincoln Hospital traces the institution’s rich history in New York City, from its humble beginnings in 1839 as a hospital for elderly and indigent black men and women, to its modern-day incarnation as a sprawling, high-tech, 21st Century medical and mental health center in the South Bronx.
The exhibit includes photos of horse-drawn ambulances and a mural that depicts the treatment of cholera in the 1800s. Later the hospital was home to the Lincoln School of Nurses, the first accredited school to teach nursing to black women , and photos show black nursing students studying in the library and nurses at work in the hospital wards. Among the artifacts in the exhibit are a traditional woolen nurse’s cap from the early 1900’s and a patients log from 1903. The gallery is located in the south corridor, adjacent to the Ambulatory Pavilion at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, 234 149th St. in the Bronx.
