Like many people, Jasmine Coleman, who has lived her whole life in East Harlem, had only experienced a hospital as a patient many years ago. "Now I see what goes on behind the scenes, how doctors really care for their patients," she said recently.

Jasmine, who will be a high school senior at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula this fall, is one of nine students - all of whom live or go to school in East Harlem - who participated in Met PALS (Preparation for Achievement in the Life Sciences), a four-week program at Metropolitan Hospital. The program is designed for young people considering careers in healthcare.

The students saw the inner workings of a hospital and interacted with doctors, nurses, and technicians. On Aug. 6, Metropolitan and the Dean's Office of New York Medical College hosted a celebration and luncheon for the young people.

Students who completed the program are: Farahana Ahmed, Townsend Harris High School; Farzana Ahmed, Manhattan Center for Science and Math; Freddy Arce, White Plains High School; Jasmine Coleman, Academy of Mount Saint Ursula; Jemelia Joseph, Academy of Mount Saint Ursula; Evelyn Martinez, Manhattan Center for Science and Math; Nabeelah Mohideen, Manhattan Center for Science and Math; Sakila Nazumudeen, Long Island City High School; Julian Okrah, Manhattan Center for Science and Math.
