HHC has joined other city agencies in working to get all New Yorkers to participate in the 2010 U.S. Census. The federal government will mail out forms in mid-March and will ask people to mail them back by April 1. The census will ask basic questions about each member in the household. No questions about citizenship, immigration or legal status are asked. For the first time, the census form will also be mailed in Spanish and will include a language guide explaining how to obtain the form in 59 other languages.
HHC will put up posters and brochures throughout hospitals and community clinics to encourage employees, patients and their family members to be counted. Vital government support – including transportation, education and social service programs – rely on the census count.
