Thirty-nine New Yorkers will move out of poverty and into guaranteed nursing jobs, after graduating with Licensed Practical Nurse certificates on June 25. The accelerated training program, a collaboration of the Center for Economic Opportunity and the HHC Nursing Career Ladder program, will place graduates at New York facilities, including HHC's Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital, where the starting salary is $40,300. A total of 78 low income New Yorkers have graduated from the program, which not only responds to the nursing shortage, but has also proven to be a promising anti-poverty initiative.
