Despite recent significant reductions in state funding to cover cancer screening for low income and uninsured New Yorkers, HHC remains committed to providing this potentially life saving screening procedure to all women who need it. In recognition of Mother’s Day, HHC will once again focus on educating women about breast cancer and the importance of mammograms during public education and screening events throughout the month of May, and special radio appearances by HHC medical experts. Women without health insurance will be able to get mammograms at little or no cost based on family size and income.
HHC will also partner with Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital to provide free mammograms for low-income Staten Island women without health insurance. Women with health insurance are also welcome to get breast cancer screening at any HHC hospital or health center. HHC is joining forces with the American Cancer Society, Fox 5, and The New York Post to promote the screening events. HHC has performed more than 300,000 mammograms over the previous four years and nearly 90,000 in the last year alone.
