HHC recognized National Nurses Week on May 15th by honoring 34 dedicated nurses who represent more than 8000 men and women who care for nearly 1.3 million New Yorkers in the city’s public hospitals, health centers and long term care centers each year.

"Nurses are the heart of the city’s public hospitals. Their compassion and dedication is reflected in the quality medical care they provide to our patients," said Dr. Ramanathan Raju, HHC Chief Medical Officer. "HHC’s Nursing professionals are also our patient’s best advocates and continue to improve patient care as shown by our dramatic system-wide reductions in hospital acquired infections and pressure ulcers."

Last year alone HHC nurses cared for more than 200,000 inpatients, helped deliver nearly 23,000 babies, treated more than 1 million emergency room cases, and provided nearly 5 million outpatient visits. The HHC nursing workforce comprises registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, senior level nurses in administration, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, and nursing support staff. Over 10% of HHC’s nursing workforce, or 870 nurses, have provided 25 years or more of service to the city’s public hospitals.

"I am honored to be an HHC Nurse," said, Marie L. Ankner, RN, Assistant Vice President, Nursing, Medical and Professional Affairs. "Nurses on the front line of New York City’s public hospital system make a difference everyday by providing critical nursing interventions, the human touch and caring presence to patients and their families."
