Bellevue Hospital, site of one of New York State's specially designated Regional Perinatal Centers, held a dedication on April 10th for the new Barbara P. Gimbel Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that will open in 2009. Ms. Gimbel, a former member of the HHC Board and HHC Foundation Board, helped to establish the Children of Bellevue, a non-profit auxiliary devoted to improving the care of Bellevue’s pediatric patients, more than fifty years ago and continues to be its strong supporter.
The new unit will provide state-of-the-art care for critically ill, premature, and high-risk infants. With a design inspired by the latest evidence-based medicine, newborns will heal and grow in an environment where light, sound, space and bedding have all been adjusted to meet their needs. Larger rooms will also support the full participation of parents as care team members.
