The Chinese New Year was welcomed again this year at Gouverneur Heathcare Services, an HHC nursing home that serves Manhattan's Lower East Side, one of New York's most famous multicultural neighborhoods. The annual celebration, this year held on February 13th, is one of the many events at which HHC facilities recognize the rich and diverse cultural heritage of their nursing home residents.
The Year of the Rat received a festive welcome, attended by the Manhattan Borough President, local elected officials and other community leaders, who paid their respects to the two centenarians at Gouverneur - residents over age 100 - who are guests of honor. The entire community turns out for the event, which includes a traditional lion dance to bring good luck, a Chinese opera singer, and performances by local school children.
"Images of Chinatown," by artist Kitty Katz, will be exhibited by the HHC Art Collection, in conjunction with the New Year celebration. The exhibit will be on display February 13-February 29, 2008.
