HHC Philanthropist Hank Carter Honored as New Yorker of the Week by NY1 News
Henry J. "Hank" Carter was chosen "New Yorker of the Week" by NY1 News for his outstanding generosity to patients and residents at Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital, many of whom are adjusting to the tragic results that gun violence has had in their lives. Through his organization Wheelchair Charities, Inc., Carter has, over the past 39 years, donated more than $25 million to HHC for specialized equipment and programs, including thousands of manual and motorized wheelchairs, specially equipped buses, modified beds, therapy equipment and more than 1,000 state-of-the-art computers and wheelchairs that can be operated by individuals with many physical challenges. HHC recently announced that it will name a new public healthcare facility in Harlem after Carter -- the first time such an honor has gone to a living individual. The Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital and Nursing Facility is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2013.
