Brooklyn, NY - As part of National Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Week, Woodhull Medical Center today honored the EMS/FDNY personnel and Woodhull medical and support staff that assisted in the care of Fire Department Lt. Richard Nappi who collapsed fighting a fire in Bushwick on April 16, 2012, and was brought to Woodhull.

Today’s honorees received awards and certificates for their role in rendering aid to Lt. Nappi, and for their dedication to our community’s healthcare needs, during a ceremony held at Woodhull Medical Center. Joining the ceremony were George M. Proctor, Senior Vice President of the North Central Brooklyn Health Network, James E. Leonard, Deputy Assistant Chief and Brooklyn Borough Commander of the New York City Fire Department, EMS personnel from local Battalions, and Woodhull Emergency Department staff.

“EMS is our partner, on a daily basis, when it comes to providing medical care and saving lives, said Mr. George M. Proctor, Senior Vice President of the North Central Brooklyn Health Network and Executive Director of Woodhull Medical Center. “As the first medical contact for those who are sick or injured, EMTs and Paramedics play a vital role in the city’s vast emergency response system.”

"I cannot say enough about the great staff and administration at Woodhull Hospital, especially as we celebrate National EMS Week" Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said. "They're our partners in providing care to thousands of New Yorkers every year, and when we needed them most, they were there for the FDNY."

The goal of EMS Week is to bring together communities and medical personnel to promote safety, educate the public about their local EMS system, and to honor the dedication of those who perform lifesaving services on the front line of healthcare. The theme for 2012 is “EMS. More Than a Job. A Calling.”

EMS Week 2012 runs from Sunday, May 20, through Saturday, May 26. For North Brooklyn, activities are planned throughout the week to honor EMS workers and educate the community about EMS.
