Mammograms

Mammogram

A mammogram can be a lifesaver! It can diagnose breast cancer at an earlier stage when treatment is more effective and prognosis more hopeful. Ultimately, mammograms can help save lives.

This May, HHC hospitals and health centers will host special mammogram education events to promote the benefits of breast cancer prevention, screening and early detection. See our event schedule below and don’t forget to stop by.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast that makes it possible to detect tumors that cannot be distinguished by visual examination or touch. It can also detect micro-calcifications (tiny deposits of calcium in the breast) that may indicate undetected breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer by mammography has reduced the number of deaths from breast cancer among women. If you are 40 or older, you should get a mammogram every 1-2 years.

Where to Schedule a mammogram?

HHC public hospitals and health centers offer affordable mammograms year round. Last year alone, we performed more than 103,000 of them! Find an HHC hospital or health center to make an appointment.

If you have no health insurance, speak to one of our bi-lingual financial counselors to see if you qualify for financial assistance.
