The Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a haven of compassionate care for those in need of long-term skilled nursing care and rehabilitation. Named after the first African-American female physician in New York State, the center reflects her vision to deliver healthcare to the residents of Brooklyn.

Everyone who comes to McKinney appreciates the tranquil, spacious and elegantly decorated rooms, equipped with specially-designed bathrooms for the elderly and disabled. Residents benefit from the patient-centered care McKinney specializes in. Amenities, such as a large-screen television, a beauty and barber shop, library, meditation room, garden courtyard and gift shop, all help patients to achieve best quality of life possible. Residents have access to an array of clinical services, including podiatry, dentistry, cardiology, ophthalmology, pulmonology, gynecology and ear, nose and throat specialists.

With rehabilitation a primary focus, McKinney’s rehabilitation services features two fully-equipped, state-of-the-art gyms, one for physical therapy and the other for occupational therapy. The goal of McKinney’s short-term unit is to return patients to their community, functioning at their highest level of independence. With goals set high, McKinney’s skilled staff is dedicated to maximizing each patient's healing process.

To meet the needs of the frail elderly, McKinney established two adult day care programs – one on premises and the other located at Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. The programs are designed for adults with chronic medical problems or physical disabilities, and participants are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team, responsible for medical monitoring and providing rehabilitation, therapeutic recreation and socialization. Coming together for five days a week, patients enjoy a continental breakfast, a hot lunch, outings, arts and crafts activities and games. Door-to-door transportation is provided.

McKinney is proud of its PACS Program, an acronym that stands for the elements essential to a successful Dementia Program: Purposeful Activity, Consistency and Structure. McKinney has two dementia units for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Through the program’s structured activities, McKinney’s specially-trained staff helps each resident maximize his or her quality of life and achieve the highest possible functional capacity.
