Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Harlem is a designated Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full spectrum of specialty services, including an adult intensive care unit, a respiratory intensive care unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, and a cardiac care unit. Harlem operates one of only a few Burn Units in New York City that include a specialty in plastic and reconstructive surgery to reduce the scarring unique to the African-American community.

Harlem is moving swiftly into the future—and the second year of its five-year modernization plan. The $249 million five-year modernization plan includes demolishing antiquated buildings, renovating 183,000 square feet, and building a 150,000 square foot Patient Pavilion. Plans include a new Emergency Department, state-of-the-art critical care and diagnostic units, and new, fully equipped operating rooms. The modernization will connect the Martin Luther King, Jr. Pavilion and the Ronald H. Brown Pavilion, parking garage and EMS Stations, creating one large healthcare complex for the Harlem community.

The modernization project is an example of Harlem's Hospital Center’s anticipation of future health issues. The hospital has also instituted wellness programs, measures patient satisfaction, and has implanted quality review programs to assure that patients receive the highest quality health care.

Harlem is home to many departments offering specially targeted treatment. Its Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center is one of the oldest in the country. The hospital's award-winning Tuberculosis Clinic has succeeded in drastically reducing active tuberculosis cases in Harlem. Other highly regarded departments include Harlem's Asthma Center. While four percent of the national population suffers from asthma, that figure approaches 20 percent in Harlem. The Asthma Prevention Project is researching the causes and solutions to this health problem.

Harlem Hospital is a teaching institution affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University since 1962. Harlem's Residency Program is one of America's largest training centers for physicians of color.
