Cumberland Diagnostic and Treatment Center has been healing the residents of Fort Greene and the surrounding Brooklyn Community for more than a century. True to its roots as a community hospital, Cumberland prides itself on responding to local health concerns through many forms of community involvement. For example, its mobile medical van travels through local neighborhoods and provides cholesterol screening, hypertension assessments, vision tests, dental screening, nutritional counseling, HIV education and drug and alcohol treatment referrals.

Cumberland is concerned with the health of Brooklynites of all ages. Annual back-to-school immunization campaigns, two school-based health programs and even a reading program, Reach Out And Read, see to the health needs of students, while the Geriatric Expo serves senior citizens.

Some 10,000 visits are made every month to Cumberland’s Chemical Dependency Program, which is one of the best and largest drug-free outpatient programs in New York State. Carrying on Cumberland’s tradition of innovation, the Chemical Dependency Programs takes advantage of a variety of treatment techniques, such as acupuncture, vocational education and instruction in parenting skills to help chemically dependent adolescents, mentally-ill chemical abusers, veterans and women return to society as productive citizens.

Cumberland also is home to the Family Health and Support Program, an inventive program that pools the resources of HHC with the Administration for Children’s Services, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Health Hygiene to improve access and treatment for families and children affected by chemical dependency. Sobriety, self-sufficiency and reunification of the family are top priorities.

Cumberland also offers a cutting-edge mammography unit, a Breast-Feeding Peer Counseling Program, parenting Education Classes and a playroom for children whose parents are receiving care.
