HHC Celebrates 70 Years of Fine Art in New York's Public Hospitals
In 2006 HHC celebrated the 70th anniversary of the world-class art collection in New York City's public hospitals. Since 1936, when the federal Works Progress Administration commissioned murals to be installed in some of New York City’s public hospitals, HHC, in cooperation with the New York City Art Commission, has developed the Art Collection to help our healthcare facilities create a pleasant and therapeutic environment for our patients, staff and visitors. In the past seven decades the collection has grown to over 6,000 pieces, including works on canvas and paper, stained glass, tapestries, mosaics and sculpture.

Haring
In August of 1986 internationally recognized artist Keith Haring generously donated his time and talent to the patients in New York City's public hospitals by creating brightly colored murals on the walls of Woodhull Medical Center with his signature parade of fun and friendly characters. Over the past 20 years Woodhull Medical Center has made many alterations, but the priceless Haring murals remain untouched.
