2. What is the role of Professional Registered Nurses?
Registered Nurses are part of an interdisciplinary team of health care providers whose goal is to provide the highest level of service to all New Yorkers across the continuum of care. They are care givers, educators, mentors, teachers and care managers.
There is a proactive approach in the delivery of quality, safe patient care through the use of advance technology such as a clinical information system, an electronic medical record and integrated medication management system.
3. Describe the services available.
New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation provide services to the people of New York regardless of ability to pay. Services cross the continuum of care, from the youngest neonate to our most distinguished seniors.
Service settings include:
- Ambulatory and inpatient services
- Womens health ( including fetal evaluation units, genetic counseling,
- family planning, mother and baby, LDRPs)
- Pediatrics ( including pediatrics and neonatal ICUs, child advocacy centers)
- Adult Medicine Center ( including step down , telemetry units, coronary care, medical ICUs , Hemodialysis, medical subspecialty clinics, oncology)
- Surgical and Surgical specialties ( including ambulatory surgery, Bariatric Surgery)

5. What educational programs are offered?
HHC is comprised of seven networks which are geographically based. Click here to see the locations of our facilities.
Each network and facility offers educational programs based upon the patient care delivery and staff’s needs. Calendars are developed which identify the educational offerings available. In addition, Registered Nurses are represented by New York State Nurses Association. There is an allowance for tuition reimbursement and conference costs.
6. HHC facilities support continuing education, professional growth and career development.
Facilities have developed based upon their needs, internship, externship, nurse residency and preceptor programs. When you apply to for employment at one of our facilities, you can discuss their specific programs available with the recruiter or hospital representative.
Training and development Departments offer network wide programs on self improvement (anger management) and examples of skill related topics include: business writing, time management, customer relations and cultural sensitivity.
Journal and book clubs are available.

7. How long is orientation?
Orientation is comprised of two parts; core and clinical. There are mandatory components for all employees. Nurses participate in education related to their area of practice. Clinical orientation is competency based, the length of orientation is based upon the nurse’s ability to progress through the required education and skills validations.
8. Do you have flex time?
The alternate work schedule is available at our facilities. At some facilities it is primarily utilized in the critical care areas. Discuss this information at your interview with the hospital representative.
9. Do you have a loan forgiveness program?
Nursing personnel employed at New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation are able to apply for a loan forgiveness program and submit the documents required to the Human Resource Department at the facility. [Need updated info.]
10. Are HHC facilities unionized and what unions represent HHC staff?
Yes. New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation nursing staff are represented as follows: The Registered Nurses are represented by New York State Nurses Association. The Licensed Practical Nurses are represented by 1199. The Nursing support staff are represented by District Council 37.
11. What are some of the benefits for RNs?
Registered Nurses are entitled to the benefits of their contract. This includes items such as tuition reimbursement, evening and night differential pay, experience pay.
12. New York City Pension eligibility?
As a member of NYC HHC, employees are entitled to join the NYC employees’ retirement system. This enables the employee to earn a New York City Pension. For additional pension information refer to www.nycers.org
13. Do I have to have experience in order to be considered for a particular position?
