Mayor's Staten Island Transportation Task Force Presents Update
The Staten Island Transportation Task Force convened to present a progress report on short, medium and long term initiatives. In addition to focusing on traffic improvement and traffic safety, significant improvements to mass transit are underway, including additional park and rides. The most notable progress includes:

  • Right turn on red study completed – 40 additional approached identified
  • DOT Takes Back the Streets – additional staffing and enforcement to ensure street cuts are properly repaired by contractors
  • Mass transit enhancements – additional trips will be added to the S89 bus, improved recovery time for evening express bus service and expanded morning services on the SIR
  • New park and ride facilities planned and expansion of existing park and rides
  • DOT Academy will meet with Community Boards to identify new short term initiatives

The task force will continue to meet on a regular basis.

Mayor Bloomberg Announces Next Steps in Battle Against Overdevelopment on Staten Island
Mayor Bloomberg today announced next steps in the battle against overdevelopment on Staten Island, and charged the Staten Island Growth Management Task Force, chaired by Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro and City Planning Director Amanda M. Burden, with the task of evaluating and addressing the pressing issues of development in commercial areas, and charting a course for the 5,700 acres on the Island's West Shore that are currently zoned for manufacturing. The Mayor also announced that the administration would develop a bold, new program to purchase significant sensitive sites in order to safeguard them from development that is at odds with local neighborhoods.
