Film Festivals in NYC Look to Raise Awareness

March 6, 2014 - Films from around the world and around the corner are showcased at a number of festivals taking place throughout March.

New Voices in Black Cinema
Taking place March 27-30 in the historic Brooklyn Academy of Music, New Voices in Black Cinema returns for its fourth year with narrative features, documentaries and shorts that redefine the black experience in America and around the world. The festival is presented in partnership with the ActNow Foundation, a non-profit advocating for diverse, independent filmmakers and playwrights whose work reflects the infinite range of African-American and Latino experiences across the globe. Brooklyn Girl Film Festival
Taking place March 27-29, the Brooklyn Girl Film Festival showcases the work of women filmmakers from around the world and brings artists together for networking in a supportive environment. The films showcased in the festival must feature a woman playing a key role as a director, writer, producer, cinematographer or lead animator. To learn more, visit brooklyngirlfilmfest.com.

New Directors/New Films
Each year New Directors/New Films unveils a brand-new lineup of fresh faces on the filmmaking scene. A co-presentation of The Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the festival is now in its 42nd year. This year’s festival runs March 19-30. The Socially Relevant Film Festival looks to raise awareness toward social issues through the medium of cinema. Taking place from March 14-20, the festival shines the spotlight on filmmakers who tell compelling, socially relevant narratives across a broad range of social issues. New York International Children’s Film Festival
Founded in 1997 to promote intelligent, passionate, provocative cinematic works for ages 3-18, this year’s NYICFF takes place from March 7-30. The festival presents 100 animated, live action and experimental shorts and features from around the world plus gala premieres, retrospectives, filmmaker Q&As and workshops. ReelAbilities
The 6th Annual ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival, the largest festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness of the life experiences of people with disabilities, will return for its sixth and largest edition yet, running from March 6-11. Initiated by The JCC in Manhattan in 2007, ReelAbilities presents award-winning films made by and about people with different disabilities - from autism to bipolar disorder, from cerebral palsy to blindness. Queens World Film Festival
The fourth Annual Queens World Film Festival returns to spotlight the work of 18 local Queens filmmakers as well as a selection of foreign films from around the word.
