| Entertainers from Broadway, Hollywood and Everywhere in Between Gather for 67th Annual Tony Awards
Kinky Boots, a musical adapted from an English film by the same name, won six awards, making it the most decorated production at the Tonys this year. In addition to Best Musical, Kinky Boots also won Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Billy Porter), Best Original Score (Cyndi Lauper), Best Sound Design of a Musical (John Shivers), Best Choreography (Jerry Mitchell), and Best Orchestrations (Stephen Oremus). Pippin and Matilda the Musical won four awards each. The former, which tells the story of Charlemagne’s son, carried Best Revival of a Musical as well as Best Actress (Patina Miller), Best Featured Actress (Andrea Martin) and Best Direction of a Musical(Diane Paulus). Matilda, which is based on a children’s novel of the same name, won Best Book of a Musical (Dennis Kelly), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Gabriel Ebert), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Rob Howell) and Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Hugh Vanstone). As for plays, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike took home Best Play and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, a play that has been produced several times and made into a film, won Best Revival of a Play, Best Direction of a Play (Pam MacKinnon) and Best Leading Actor in a Play (Tracy Letts). Mayor Michael Bloomberg received the Tony Honor for Excellence in Theatre due to his continued support of Broadway. Mayor Bloomberg is one of only two New York mayors in history to receive recognition at the Tonys (John Lindsay was the first, in 1973). The Mayor was also part of a diverse cast of presenters that ranged from cinema stars like Scarlet Johansson and Tom Hanks to theatre legends like Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters.
